When a player draws a stocks tile in Carcassonne, it must be played adjacent to an existing city on the board. The player then has the choice—but not the requirement—to deploy one of their followers either onto the city itself or into the newly placed stocks feature. This flexibility allows strategic decision-making regarding follower positioning without forcing commitment. Should no valid city exist for attachment, the tile is permanently removed from play, prompting an immediate draw of a new tile to continue the turn seamlessly.
